History
World Creation Studio was officially founded in January 2020 as a nonprofit arts organization. Stemming from an Montreal artist-run space started in 2014 by the collective susy.technology, the studio continues to grow with the aim of serving an even greater community of emerging and professional artists.
In our first two years we have achieved several milestones in increasing our organizational capacity. We expanded our studio facilities adding a third audiovisual production suite, launched our new website, hosted multiple live audio-visual performances in our space, and successfully piloted our Young Creators and Artist Residency programs. We invested significantly into the research and development of our organization’s web and digital infrastructure, including artist managed profile pages, live-streaming capabilities, a chat feature, project archives, and interactive map for arts events.
In addition to our programming we developed partnerships with organizations in our community hosting the online edition of Composite #27 with Xn Québec, and working with Eastern Bloc to assist in the production of the online exhibition design for the 2021 edition of Sight + Sound Festival. We also have an ongoing partnership with Jeunesse 2000, where they assist us in finding candidates and community outreach for our Young Creators Program.
Facilities
Production Suites
We have three rooms catered for audiovisual production. The suites are booked by reservation and are available via monthly studio membership or individual sessions.
All three suites are sound insulated with acoustic treatment and are equipped with reference monitors, MIDI controllers, and secondary displays, with access to a recording booth and upright piano in our recording suite. Studio members have access to an inventory of projectors, instruments, audio interfaces, and microphones upon request.
Presentation Space
Our presentation space is used for performances, installations, and artist talks. The space is also available to use as a workstation for artists in residence.
Interdisciplinary Media Lab
Since WCS opened in 2020, we’ve been working towards developing a maker space where studio members can access and share a variety of equipment and tools for their projects. Addressing cross collaborations between disciplines, our new space, Interdisciplinary Media Lab, provides artists with digital fabrication equipment, electronics benches, a wide range of materials, and a library of digital and material resources such as DIY guides, interdisciplinary art books, and books on artistic making.
The Lab allows artists to explore an array of creation mediums such as electronics, coding, 3D printing, biomaterials, ceramics, and other fabrication methods.
Our equipment consists of electronics workbenches, 3D printers (FDM, resin, & ceramics), a CNC (with wood, aluminum, acrylics & other specialty materials), coding stations, sewing machines, and power tools. In addition, artists new to this equipment have access to technical support that can help them realize their projects.
Structure
World Creation Studio’s governance body operates as a Collective Board which carries out all administrative functions of the organization and is composed of board and staff alike. Operating as a single entity, the Collective Board implements a consensus model in the decision making process and organizational strategy. The collective board consists of a majority of working artists and professional cultural workers and programming is built by a committee composed of member artists of the organization. Our organization is dedicated to providing opportunities to professional artists to be paid wages in accordance with CARFAC standards.
Our studio operates under a sustainable model, where core members of the studio pay monthly for blocks of studio time. Our pricing for studio access is designed to be affordable, and we are able to offer some studio memberships and individual sessions at a sliding scale. Through our Artist Residency and Young Creators programs, we offer studio access for free.
World Creation Studio acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
