The Vagabonds altar (2024)
Tati au Miel

The Vagabond’s Altar is the second installment of The Tale of The Vagabond, a series presenting the story of a fictional hybrid human-bird character called The Vagabond. The first installment was presented as a performance piece and sculpture that was developed during the Echo Correspondence residency in Vienna, in 2022.

*The Vagabond* is a nomadic being, wandering from place to place, with errantry as its sole navigation mode. *The Vagabond’s Altar* is a piece seeking to explore the Vagabond’s relation to spirituality through artifacts, sacred items such as memorabilia, textiles, images, and sound; tracing a landscape of the Vagabond’s internal and external world as a mutant of sorts… Each component of the altar is hyper-infused with symbols of transformation, rebellion, and remnants of navigational and sonic interventions.

*The Vagabond’s Altar* will be presented as an augmented reality experience where the components are augmented reality artworks placed in a setting incorporating 360-degree footage as part of the virtual landscape of the altar.

CO/CREATE

Open to ten local artists working across digital media, CO/CREATE is a 4 month long residency at World Creation Studio that includes access to studio time, equipment, workshops, and multi-part introduction to immersive creation at the SAT dome. Throughout the residency, artists are encouraged to collaborate with one another and our immersive design team to contribute to the creation of a group exhibition that incorporates VR and immersive audio.

CO/CREATE challenges artists to experiment with new ways of conceptualizing and developing work through collaboration. The residency welcomes artists making their initial foray into working with VR and spatialized sound, as well as those experienced in audio-visual tools, softwares and workflows.

2024 Edition

With this edition of the residency, Post-Reality served as the thematic catalyst, challenging artists to delve into the evolving nature of perception, existence, and social constructs in our digital age. With this guiding thematic being intentionally open, the group of artists’ engaged in ways that span from political and social commentary to the abstract, including both contemplative and playful reflections. This collective exploration led to the realization of six immersive projects that interweave the unique perspectives on, and responses to the notion of Post-Reality. Traversing a wide range of themes from posthumanism and dystopian futures to speculative ecologies, dream worlds, and reflections on the creative industries, the works engage with the creative possibilities of virtual reality, spanning cinematic, exploratory, generative, meditative, and hyper-stimulating immersive experiences.

Through personal interpretations and narratives of worldbuilding, the CO/CREATE invites visitors to dive into speculative spaces. Audiences will find a diversity of life, environments, and stories that reflect the diversity of the artists themselves—their backgrounds, interests and unique perspectives on the world they live in and the worlds they envision. These VR projects invite us to reflect on interconnectedness, kinship, relationships beyond anthropocentric perspectives and the antagonism that emerges as we interact with others and navigate differences of class, race, sexual orientations, and faith. Some of the characters, soundscapes, and imaginaries presented within the exhibition connect to identities and ideas that do not yet have a space in this world, and therefore remind us of the political and technological constructs that define our experiences of the here, now, and beyond.
