The OPEN/WORLD artist residency aims to foster an environment where artists can delve deep into their work, experiment, and push boundaries, with the outcome of sharing their creative explorations with the community in the form of either an exhibition, workshop or talk.
The residency program supports artists in developing a project, skill or research related to their practice and offers artists a dedicated period of residency support including studio space, creative mentorship and digital tools and resources to explore and evolve their practice further.
Artist in Residence
Tati au Miel
Tania Daniel, also known as Tati au Miel, was born in 1997 in Montreal to Haitian immigrant parents and has been an independent artist since 2017. Their practice incorporates various mediums to produce evocative experimental sound pieces, sculptural and textile explorations, and ritualistic performances that delve into contemplations on freedom, spirituality, storytelling, surrealism, and beyond.
They recently released ‘Carousel’ EP on the label Halcyon Veil, preceded by six independent musical releases. Their work has been showcased in festivals such as Mutek (Montreal), Sonic Arts (Amsterdam), Dweller (New York), and galleries Kurimanzutto (Mexico City), Auto Italia (London), and Human Resources (Los Angeles).
Rêverie
Driven by a curiosity to expand their practice through exploring new mediums, Tati au Miel is creating an immersive installation that interweaves the sonic, physical, and digital realms through a series of interconnected sculpture and sound pieces. Themes of boundlessness, spirituality, black queer identities, and migration guide their distinct approach to storytelling and conjure an interplay of dream-like objects and experiences.
A chime-like sound sculpture assembled from found objects and sensors forms a point of tactile connection where the audience can uncover and manipulate sounds within the environment. Suspended textiles and a collection of 3D printed and ceramic sculptures act as anchors in the space, a tangible counterpoint to the next layer which brings the viewer into an audio-visual VR experience. Exploration of sound is central to Tati au Miel’s artistic process and plays a pivotal role in crafting the universe of Rêverie. Shaping the ambience and narrative flow of the experience, and drawing from diverse musical influences, the sonic landscape is a critical dimension of the installation.
Tati au Miel’s exhibition and artist talk will take place during the month of September at World Creation Studio. In parallel to their OPEN/WORLD residency, they will perform Rêverie as a live performance at MUTEK Montreal.
