As more and more aspects of our lives take place online our relationship with each other and with technology changes. Many of us have become reliant on digital technologies for our sources of income, social interaction and entertainment – yet we are not in control of the technology or the ways our data can be mined and exploited. Inspired by artists Alice Aterman and Della Orrey’s own experiences as freelance creatives working remotely, Degrade Park is their exploration of the complex relationship between creativity, technology and capitalism.
Starting in a deceptively unassuming park, participants are transported between contrasting expressions of our modern digital experience – both the hyper-stimulating and the self-reflective, prompting the viewer to question the nature of this reality and that of their own. How do our digital experiences shape our perception of the world? What unseen forces influence our experiences? Degrade Park challenges viewers to confront the often-overlooked terms and conditions we accept in our daily digital lives, encouraging reflection on our relationships to the digital spaces and systems we share.
Alice Aterman (al11z) is a passionate 3D generalist and digital artist based in Tio’tia:Ke/Montréal. With a penchant for injecting fantasy into the mundane, she specializes in crafting environments that blend the digital and physical realms. The CO/CREATE residency allowed her the opportunity to slow down her otherwise fast-paced creation process and explore new mediums and techniques. Degrade Park is the culmination of this; delving into Virtual Reality, world-building, interactivity and game logic, and the exploration of ‘post-reality’.
Della Orrey (she/they) is a Tio’tia:Ke/Montréal based creative entrepreneur focusing on music and sound creation in support to a wide array of audio-visual projects. Contributing original music and sound design to VR projects “Degrade Park” “Samsara” and “The Bend”, marks their entrance into virtual world building using Unreal engine in collaboration with 3D artists Alice Anterman, Malik McCoy and Laura Caraballo. Della releases music under the recording artist moniker Djeity and is developing a performance practice that expands off their time at the CO/CREATE residency.
