Saṃsāra is an immersive VR experience that takes participants on an introspective and meditative journey through a dream-like maze. Visitors appear in a far reaching field of flowers where a translucent maze made of cloth blows in the wind. As visitors navigate through the experience, they are prompted with a series of cryptic, existential questions that determine which path they follow. Strange and surprising objects appear to float through the sky offering hints into the psyche of the maze.

Accompanying the visitors on their journey is an evolving string and electronic soundtrack co-created by Fili 周 Gibbons and Della Orrey that morphs and changes according to vistor’s path in the maze. Through a delicate combination of space, structure, and sound, the artists seek to juxtapose gaming technologies and VR – often associated with intense or overwhelming experiences – with a more meditative and serene experience.

Reflected in its winding form, esoteric questions posed and soundtrack, Saṃsāra encourages a delicate facet of the human experience: introspection.

Saṃsāra is a term in Pali, a language historically spoken in central regions of India, which translates to “wandering” or “world,” and less formally to “running around circles.”

Laura Caraballo (She/Her) is an interdisciplinary visual artist born in Bogota, Colombia and based in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Her current practice centers around liminal space-building, exploring 3D/VR world-creation as a medium to encompass spiritual and mental quests. Laura is interested in using technology to create spaces that provoke meaningful conversations including critical perspectives of the medium itself.

Della Orrey (she/they) is a Tio’tia:Ke/Montréal based creative entrepreneur focusing on music and sound creation to support a wide array of audio-visual projects. Contributing original music and sound design to VR projects “Degrade Park” “Delirium” and “Self Titled: Malik McKoy” marks their initial entrance into virtual world building using Unreal engine in collaboration with 3D artists. Della releases music under the recording artist moniker Djeity and is excited to develop a performance practice expanding off their time at the CO/CREATE residency.

Fili 周 Gibbons (we/they/them) are a musician and sound engineer of mixed Chinese and Canadian ancestry based in Tiohtià:ke / Montreal. Their artistic practice is a synthesis of cello performance, audio creation, embodiment, and traditional memory systems — employing these as potencies for the expression of plural identities, and the transmission of cultural memory.
