Sound Production with Ableton Live

In this 2-part workshop, we’ll learn the basics of recording, sound processing, and sound design using Ableton Live- and explore them in our music studios!

In a broad overview of the essential skills, concepts, and tools used in music production, this workshop introduces how Ableton Live can be used for recording, MIDI composition, sound design, mixing, collaboration, live performance and more- taking you through everything between initially navigating Live’s interface, to exporting a finished track.

 

Workshop Format:

  • 2 hour workshop + 1 hour open studio

Workshop objectives

  • Familiarize ourselves with the layout and interface of Live
  • Understand how to collaborate with other producers and musicians using Live
  • Obtain a broad overview of the tools and vocabulary used in music production and sound engineering
  • Go over the basics of recording an instrument or microphone into Live
  • Learn to use MIDI to compose
  • Examine sound design techniques
  • Understand essential concepts and tools used when mixing a song
  • Learn techniques for live performance and how to prepare a session for one

Session One
Intro to Ableton Live

 

The first session will cover the basics of navigating Live’s interface, including how to set up and organize a session, use Ableton’s built-in plugins, record external instruments, and work with MIDI.

Session Two
Audio Processing and Live Performance

The second session will have a more exploration-based focus, demonstrating what makes Live a unique application for sound processing, collaboration, and live performance. We will investigate some creative ways to use its included tools and features, covering intermediate concepts and techniques that can be used for creating, mixing, and performing music.

Tatum Wilson (pseudonym operaa) is a producer, composer and sound artist working in Montreal. His work examines how the interplay of sound, perception and technology can elicit memory, emotion, and healing. Through a delicate treatment of sound and space, he creates immersive and intricate compositions that draw from ambient, experimental, and orchestral music.

Currently, he is participating in an artist residency at the Société des arts technologiques (2023-2024) and works as a team member of World Creation Studio. His debut EP ‘Falling To The Point Of Floating’  was released by Barcelona-based label xenonyms in 2021, and he frequently works and collaborates on projects spanning film, music and digital art, which have been featured by organizations such as Radio Canada, National Film Board of Canada, The Siminovitch Prize, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal, Fantasia International Film Festival, and Rendez-Vous Quebec Cinema. He holds a BFA in Electroacoustic Studies from Concordia University (2018).
